Open a bank account

New to Westpac?

You can open either an Everyday account with a debit card or a Simple Saver account online in minutes. You can also PIN your debit card online so it will be ready to use once you get it - no need to come into a branch!

To apply using Westpac EasyID, all we need is a video selfie and a NZ driver licence or NZ passport. Otherwise, if you have a RealMe verified identity you can apply with RealMe.

Note: You may need to come into branch if further information is required.

If you don't have any of these forms of identification, you'd like to open a different account or would prefer to apply in branch, please call 0800 400 600 to make an appointment at your local branch, and we'll help you open your account in person.

Want to open a savings account online?

If you're a new customer, you can apply for a Simple Saver account online using Westpac EasyID or RealMe.

If you're an existing customer, you can open a Simple Saver, Westpac Bonus Saver or Term Deposit using Westpac One online banking.

For other savings accounts, come into branch and we can open the account for you.

If you're not registered for Westpac One

If you're a new customer, we'll get you signed up for Westpac One online banking once we've opened your Westpac Everyday or Simple Saver account.

If you sign up using Westpac EasyID or RealMe, you'll automatically be signed up for Westpac One [once you've completed your online application].

If you're a new customer, you can open a Westpac Everyday account with a debit card or a Simple Saver account online using Westpac EasyID or RealMe.

If you're an existing customer, you can open a Westpac Everyday account, an Westpac Bonus Saver or Simple Saver account using Westpac One online banking (for the Westpac Bonus Saver account you will need to have an Everyday account first).

If you'd like to open another type of account, we suggest you make an appointment then come in to your local branch with identification so we can open your account for you.

RealMe is an identity verification service provided by the New Zealand Government to securely prove who you are online. Find out more on here.

If you can't see the account you'd like to open, it's likely that it's an account that needs to be opened in branch - like a Youth account, Graduate account or investment PIE account. You can find your local branch with our branch finder - we recommend you call to make an appointment to avoid a wait. Don't forget to bring some identification with you!

If you're looking to open a joint account, both of you will need to head into a Westpac branch with your passport, drivers' licence or other form of ID.

Once you're 16 years old, you can open your own Westpac account. You might like our Westpac Everyday account, which has no transaction and account maintenance fees for under 19s3. Head into branch with some identification and proof of address and we'll get you set up.

If you're under 16, you'll need to get your parent or guardian to open a bank account for you – but from the age of 12 you can have responsibility for the account yourself as long as your parents (or guardian) are okay with that. To open a Youth account like this, go to any Westpac branch with your parent or guardian, and some identification.

Log in to Westpac One, where you can order a new debit card connected to an everyday account you already have, or open a new everyday account with a new debit card that will be mailed to you.

If you don't have a Westpac One login, you can:

  • call us on 0800 400 600 and we'll sort it out over the phone, or
  • call +64 9 912 8000 if you're overseas (international toll charges apply), or
  • visit us at any Westpac branch.

To open a Youth account, head in branch with some identification and proof of address for yourself and the child, and we'll get you set up.

Take a look at the School Leavers account page. We have the Tertiary account for people going on to tertiary study, and the Career Starter account for people who are going into employment. Both need to be opened in branch.

Take a look at our Graduate account. It's designed to help people transition from tertiary study into the workforce. You'll need to head into a branch to open a Graduate Account.

A great place to start is our FX, Travel and Migrant section. It will give you essential information about moving to New Zealand, banking in New Zealand and more. You may even be able to open a bank account with Westpac before you arrive in the country; or if you'd like to sign up once you get here, pop into any Westpac branch with identification documents.

You can fill out this online form, and we'll call you back to answer any questions and set up an appointment. Otherwise, call us weekdays 8am-6pm, on 0800 177 188 to set up your appointment to come in branch and open your business account.

You can open a Simple Saver account without an Everyday account. HPlease call us on 0800 400 600 to find out more, or come into branch to discuss your needs.

To start using Online Banking you’ll need:

  • a Westpac account
