Uber and Westpac

Uber is the popular choice of more than 450,000 Kiwis who regularly use the ridesharing service to get around the seven cities they operate in New Zealand. With Uber’s 6,000 drivers, Kiwis can push a button on their smartphones and get a ride within minutes, 24/7, 365 days a year.

We’ve teamed up with Uber to provide personal Westpac credit or debit Mastercard® customers  the opportunity to experience more during this winter and spring, getting even greater value from their banking package. This offer will make it more affordable and convenient for our customers to travel to work, dinner with friends or even a gig. It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’ for banking with us.

The Uber app connects you with a ride at the tap of a button. Choose your ride and set your location. You'll see your driver's picture and vehicle details, and track their arrival on a map, all within the Uber app. No phone calls to make, no pick-ups to schedule. It’s easy to use – just download the app from the App Store or Google Play onto your smartphone, load your personal Westpac Mastercard®, enter your promo code (if you have one). Once your promo is activated (this can take up to 24 hours), enter your destination and go. No more fumbling for cash; your fare is charged straight to the Westpac Mastercard® saved in your Uber account. See Uber for more information.

We're sorry to hear this. This dispute will remain between Uber and yourself. We will not recuperate any costs for this.

No, your free ride allowance of up to $30* off every third ride, includes ride spend only and does not include fees such as 'wait time'. Wait time fees are calculated based on the time an Uber driver spends waiting after they've already arrived at your pickup location. This charge will begin automatically after 2 minutes of waiting at the pickup point. You'll see this in the Uber app too.

About the offer

All personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® customers can get every third Uber ride free (up to $30 off that ride) in New Zealand until 30 November 2018, up to the total value of $150*. To be eligible, new customers must apply for a personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® on or before 30th September 2018.

To take advantage of this offer your personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® must be used as the method of payment in the Uber app along with your promo code.

Personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® customers can get every third Uber ride free (up to $30 off) in New Zealand until 30 November 2018, up to the total value of $150*. To be eligible, new customers must apply for a personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard on or before 30 September 2018.  

There’s no catch however, with every offer there are rules including eligibility, end dates, maximum savings etc. For example with this offer every third ride is free up to the value of $30. If the third ride costs $31, you’ll pay $1. The offer will end on 30 November 2018, or once you reach $150 of free rides (if that happens before 30 November 2018). Please ensure you have read the Terms and Conditions in full, detailed at the bottom of this page, to ensure that this offer is right for you.   

1) Every third ride is free up to the value of $30

If you take a third ride that costs over $30, you’ll simply pay the difference between the $30 free ride cap and the total cost of the ride.

2) Total saving of $150 per customer in New Zealand until 30th November 2018 – this is the total cost of all free rides combined.

Don’t worry, Uber will send you an email (to your email address registered with Uber) to notify you when you are approaching the $150 of total savings and once you have reached it.

Don’t worry, there’s a first time for everything. If you haven’t already, you will need to apply for a personal Westpac credit and/or debit Mastercard®. Once approved, you will be sent a promo code along with your card. Simply download the Uber App from App Store or Google Play on your smartphone, activate the offer by inserting your promo code, refer to FAQ ‘How do I activate this offer?’.

Unfortunately not, this is a joint promotion with Uber.

Activating the offer

If you are a new customer, your promo code will arrive with your new card. This can take up to 10 days to arrive. If you already have an eligible card and have not yet received a code, log into Westpac One online banking and click the link in the promo banner and follow the prompts to get your Uber code. If you don’t have Westpac One, please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help.

1)     Get your promo code

2)     If you haven’t already, activate your Westpac Mastercard® and download the Uber App from the App store for Apple phones, or Google Play Store for Android phones.

3)     From the Uber App menu select, Payment and add your new Westpac Mastercard®

4)     Tap Add Promo Code, enter the code 

5)     Use your Westpac Mastercard® as your payment method

It can take up to 24 hours for your promo code to activate this exclusive offer in the Uber app. Once activated you will see a blue ride tracker in your Uber app.

Promo codes

A promo code is a unique eleven digit alphanumeric code. A promo code will be provided to you if you are eligible for this offer. You will need to input this code within the Uber app (Menu>Payment>Add Promo Code) along with your personal Westpac credit or debit Mastercard® as your method of payment.

It can take up to 24 hours for your promo code to activate this exclusive offer in the Uber app. Once activated you will see a blue ride tracker in your Uber app.

You will be able to track whether you are on your first, second or third ride within the Uber app. 

I applied for my personal Westpac credit and/or debit Mastercard® account: 

- On or after 27/06/2018: Your promo code will arrive with your new card, along with a leaflet explaining the offer. It can take up to 5 working days for your card to arrive in the mail after your new account has been opened. If you have already received this letter and mislaid it or you are a joint account holder and have only received one promo code, please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help. 

- On or before 26/06/2018: Depending on your location and communication preferences, we may have sent notification of your promo code via email, Westpac One online banking or mail during late June to mid July 2018. If you are unable to find this please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help. 

This depends on when you opened your personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® account.

- On or after 27/06/2018 – Your promo code was included within your Welcome Letter along with your new credit or debit card. If you no longer have this, please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help.

- On or before 26/06/2018 – Please check your email or Westpac One online banking messages. If you are unable to find the promo code please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help.

Each promo code is unique and can only be applied to one Uber account. Please try and enter your code again (remember the promo code is case sensitive), if this still doesn’t work please call our friendly team on 0800 400 600 and we’ll be happy to help. Depending on the problem we may require you to contact Uber directly through their App.

Free rides

Uber will send you a text message or email once you have entered your promo code. It can take up to 24 hours for your promo code to activate this exclusive offer in the Uber app. Once a blue ride tracker appears in the Uber app, you will be able to track whether you are on your first or second ride within the Uber app. Your third ride will be free if it is $30 or under. However, if your fare is above $30 you will pay the difference. 

Example: If you take a third ride that costs $31.50, you’ll simply pay the difference between the $30 free ride cap and the total cost of the ride, in this case it would cost $1.50.

You will need to use your personal Westpac debit or credit Mastercard® as your method of payment within the Uber app for this offer to work.

Uber will send you an email (to your email address registered with Uber) to notify you when you are approaching the $150* of total savings and once you have reached it.

That’s easy, you will receive a combined saving of up to $30. If the ride costs anything above the $30 free ride cap, each rider that has agreed to the split fare will be charged an equal share of the difference.

Example: If you take a third ride that costs $42, you will qualify for the $30 free ride saving. This means there is an outstanding $12. As you have agreed to split the fare with two other friends via the Uber App you will each be charged an equal share of the $12 difference, this equals $4 each.

When you start, 0/2 on your ride tracker means you are 2 trips away from unlocking your first free ride. 1/2 on your ride tracker means you are only 1 trip away from your free ride. When you have taken 2 trips, your next ride will be free (up to $30) and the Westpac Rides Tracker will re-set to '0/2'. To check if your next ride is free, simply enter your destination, choose uberX or uberASSIST, and you will see your upfront fare displayed as '$0.00' before you request your ride. If your trip is over $30, then the upfront fare should show the difference (less $30). This cycle will continue in your Uber app until you have either redeemed up to $150 worth of free rides value or until November 30, 2018.* 

Downloading the Uber App

Firstly, you will need a smart phone and access to the internet. Simply follow the instructions below.

I have an Android smartphone
You can download and install the Uber rider app on Android devices with operating system 4.0.3 and newer. Head to the Google Play store and follow these steps:

1. Tap the Google Play icon.
2. Tap the search bar, type Uber, then tap Search.
3. Select the Uber icon and tap INSTALL.
4. After app installation is complete, tap OPEN.
5. In the Uber app, tap SIGN IN if you have an account or tap REGISTER to create one.

I have an Apple smartphone
You can download and install the Uber rider app on devices with iOS 8 and newer. Using your mobile device, tap the App Store icon and follow these steps:

1. Select Search from the menu, type Uber in the search bar, then tap Search.
2. Select the Uber icon.
3. Tap GET. Your device may require you to enter your App Store password.
4. When downloading is complete, GET will change to INSTALL. Tap INSTALL.
5. When the installation is complete, INSTALL will change to OPEN. Tap OPEN.
6. In the Uber app, tap SIGN IN if you have an account or tap REGISTER to create.
