Avoid unarranged overdraft fees

Direct credit your pay

If you’re paid in cash, ask your employer to direct deposit your pay into your account. This can help ensure it is deposited on time ready to pay bills, and saves you the time of going to the bank to deposit your money.

Plan your regular payments

You could set up your automatic payments for the day after payday, this way you’re more likely to have the money available.

Set up Salary Splitter

You can automatically split your salary into different accounts, and keep your savings separate from your spending money. You could set it up so you have one account for all your bills. This will help make sure you have enough to pay direct debits, automatic payments and bill payments each pay period.

Set up sweep-over

Automatically move money between accounts. It's great for keeping your balance at a certain level without having to worry about it, ensuring you always have enough in your transactional account for automatic payments, direct debits, and planned bill payments.

Use bill payments instead of paying by Direct Debit

You can use our online bill payments tool to ensure you have enough money in your account before paying bills. This way you’re in control of when you pay the bill – just make sure you know when bills are due (put a note in your diary) so you don’t forget.

Use mobile & text banking

View balances and transfer money on Westpac One® online banking mobile app, or between two nominated accounts by text on your registered mobile, while you’re out and about. You can also set up alerts to notify you when your balance goes above or below amounts you set. See here for more information.

 

Avoid ATM fees

We've removed the $1 fee to use another major New Zealand bank’s ATM in New Zealand. Find the location of your nearest ATM.

Avoid credit card interest

It's best to pay off the closing balance of your credit card bill each month if possible. Only making the minimum payment means you will have more interest to pay. You can also set up a direct debit to pay the closing balance in full, or the minimum repayment, each month.

Get email and text alerts 

You can set up text or email alerts to let you know:

  • when planned Bill Payments or Automatic Payments fail – you have a day to transfer the amount needed, so your payment doesn’t fail
  • when you've missed a loan payment
  • three days before a credit card payment is due to avoid late payment fees.

You can choose the type of alerts you'd like to receive. To register for text and email alerts you just need to be signed up for online banking. To set up online banking give us a call – 0800 400 600, or pop into a branch.

Use Westpac One 

  • It’s quick and easy to  access and check balances.
  • Setting up or amending your automatic payments online is easy.
  • The Westpac One App allows you to use it on your mobile phone when you're out and about.
  • Stop paper statements – with an Everyday account you won’t pay a monthly account maintenance fee if you cancel your paper statements and view them online instead.

Use Cashnav®

To help you manage your money and see where you're spending it, download Cashnav. You will need to be signed up for online banking to use Cashnav.

Save time and money on bank accounts:

  • Make sure you have the transaction account that’s right for you
  • Splitting your pay between your accounts using Salary Splitter could reduce the time and effort of transferring money between your accounts
  • Avoid using a savings account as an everyday transaction account to reduce transaction and service fees
  • Close unused or forgotten accounts
  • Stop paper statements
  • Use self-service ATMs when in branch.

Fee waivers for superannuitants

Monthly account maintenance and transaction fees1 are waived if you have an eligible Westpac transaction account direct credited with your:

  • New Zealand National Superannuation
  • UK Retirement Pension
  • New Zealand War Pension.

Fee waivers on Youth Accounts

You could save on fees, such as electronic transaction or account maintenance fees on these Youth Accounts1:

  • Westpac Everyday
  • Simple Saver.

Each child can have up to two Youth Accounts and the fee waiver is valid until they reach 19 years of age, at which point they may begin to be charged fees. 

Fee waivers for school leavers and graduates

You could save on fees with our Tertiary Accounts. These savings continue for 12 months after you graduate with our Graduate Accounts2
