Everyday EFTPOS card

An EFTPOS card is connected to your transaction account, so when you spend, you're using your own money. If you need one, pop into any Westpac branch and we'll set you up with one straight away.

Benefits

FAQs

Like an EFTPOS card, a debit card links to one of your transaction accounts – so when you use it, you’re spending money that’s in your account.
And a debit card has some other added benefits: you can use it online, over the phone and overseas – anywhere you can use a credit card. All of our debit cards also come with the added protection of CardGuard™.
Finally, having a debit card gives you the option of our Airpoints™ Debit Mastercard®, where you’ll earn Airpoints on your everyday purchases1.

1. Eligible purchases exclude cash withdrawals, payments for cash-equivalents (such as travellers’ cheques, money orders and gambling chips) and business-related purchases. See the Debit Card Conditions of Use for full details of all excluded transactions.

If you have misplaced your debit or credit card, don't panic. You can now temporarily block and unblock your card instantly in Westpac One with Card Blocker. To learn how, click here.

An Airpoints Debit Mastercard complements your Airpoints credit card. If you have both cards, you’ll be making the most of earning Airpoints Dollars on all your spending¹.

1. Eligible purchases exclude cash withdrawals, payments for cash-equivalents (such as travellers’ cheques, money orders and gambling chips) and business-related purchases. See the Debit Card Conditions of Use for full details of all excluded transactions.

Airpoints Dollars are associated with your Air New Zealand Airpoints account. So any Airpoints Dollars earned using a credit card will continue to be credited to that Airpoints account, as will Airpoints Dollars earned on your Westpac Airpoints Debit Mastercard.

You will pay a foreign currency fee of 2.50% when you use your Westpac credit card or debit/ATM card to make an overseas transaction.

This fee is made up of two portions :

  • one charged by Westpac (currently 1.5%)
  • one charged by the credit card scheme that processes the transaction: Visa (1.0%) or Mastercard (1.0%).

Transactions made overseas with a Westpac Debitplus Visa card or Debit Mastercard

  • are processed by Visa or Mastercard.

Transactions made overseas with a Westpac debit/ATM card

International transaction fee

  • when you use your debit card or credit card at an overseas ATM you’ll pay an $3 international transaction fee
  • you can avoid this fee by using an ATM at a bank belonging to the ATM Global Alliance.

>     more information on the ATM Global Alliance

You can access the money in your everyday account by using your Westpac ATM card at a large number of ATMs.
Look for ATMs that have either a Cirrus or a PLUS logo. (Mastercard uses Cirrus and Visa uses Plus)

If you’re overseas you won’t have to pay the NZ$3 international transaction fee to use ATMs belonging to a member of the Global ATM Alliance*.

If you're travelling overseas, let us know on 0800 888 111 and we'll make sure you're all set for your trip.

*The NZ$3 international transaction fee saving applies to Westpac only, and is subject to change. Global ATM Alliance banks and their details are subject to change. All other international and standard fees apply including foreign currency conversion fees - refer to the Transaction and Service fees brochure. NOTE: whenever you use your Westpac credit or debit card to withdraw money from overseas ATMs your transactions will incur a foreign currency conversion fee. This is currently 2.5% of the New Zealand converted value of the foreign currency transaction amount. The currency conversion fee will be displayed on your statement.

You can withdraw up to $800 at a time from an ATM. To get more cash, make two or more withdrawals. (This limit is in place because the machines can't actually dispense more than 40 notes at once).

  • For domestic ATM cash withdrawals there is a $3,000 limit per day
  • For international ATM cash withdrawals there is a $2,000 limit per day

This is to ensure no one can fraudulently empty your account if they discover your PIN number. This includes weekends and holidays.

We also limit your total EFTPOS spending and ATM withdrawals in one day to $10,000. If you've used a Gold, Business or Premium credit card for your EFTPOS purchase your daily limit may be higher. The limit will be dropped a few minutes after midnight.

  • For example: If you buy $9,500 worth of jewellery in one day with EFTPOS (as you do), you will only be able to withdraw $500 that day from an ATM machine.

How can I get around this limit?

The daily limit is in place to protect against fraud, and we cannot switch it off for you.

However, the limit applies to your card rather than your account. So if it's a joint account and the other account holder has their own card, you could ask for their help to double your limit

  • For domestic ATM cash withdrawals there is a $3,000 limit per day (with the exception of Airpoints Business Mastercard and BusinessPLUS Mastercard)
  • For international ATM cash withdrawals there is a $2,000 limit per day

Come into any Westpac branch, with your ATM card and some ID so we can be sure you're really you. We can then help you give your card a new PIN number. There's no charge for this service.

If you are overseas, the best thing to do is call us on +64 9 912 8000 (International toll charges will apply). We can arrange your PIN to be sent to you in a secure way.
