How do I apply for a personal loan?

To apply for a personal loan, you can:

To apply for a personal loan, you must be 18 years or older and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident with a Westpac transaction account. Eligibility and lending criteria and terms and conditions apply.

You can apply for a personal loan on our website, in Westpac One® digital banking or by calling us to make an appointment at your local branch.

Westpac customers.

Apply for a personal loan in Westpac One digital banking. You’ll need:
  • Details of your personal income, expenses, debts and assets
  • A transaction account with Westpac (if you don’t already have one you can open this in your digital banking as well).
In the app:
  1. Go to More
  2. Choose Open/Apply
  3. Go to Lending and select Apply, then go to Personal Loan and select Apply
  4. Check that a personal loan is right for you, then choose Get started
  5. On the next screen:
    • Select Loan details and use our calculator to work out your loan amount, term and repayments
    • Choose Your details to check the details we have for you
    • Tell us about your Savings and assets
    • Select Debts and tell us the details of any other loans and credit cards
    • Select Your income & expenses and tell us your income from all sources, your fixed expenses and living costs
  6. Let us know if you have accounts or credit facilities with other banks or financial providers, then choose Next
  7. Upload your statements from those banks or add details of your other accounts manually, then choose Next
  8. Review your financial details, add anyother income or expenses, then choose Next
  9. Let us know if you expect any changes to your income or expenses in the next 12 months
  10. Review your application details, choose Edit to change any of the details, then choose Submit.
In online banking
1. From the Accounts screen, scroll and choose Open/Apply
2. Choose Apply from under Lending, then Apply from under Personal Loan
3. Check that a personal loan is right for you, then choose Get started

We use an open banking service provider Akahu to sort and categorise your transactions and make the application process faster and easier. If you have accounts with other banks we may need you to upload your statements.
