What is open banking?

Open banking is a secure way to connect your bank account with trusted third-party apps and services – always with your permission. It’s designed to give you more ways to make payments and manage your money, while keeping you in control.

What this means for Westpac customers

If you choose to give consent, approved providers can connect securely to your  Westpac One® account to provide their services. This might include:

  • Making a one-off payment from your account, such as buying something online
  • Setting up regular payments, like paying bills or transport fares
  • Sharing account details securely, for example your transaction history or account statements when applying for a loan.

You’re always in control. Nothing is shared or actioned without your permission, and you can manage or withdraw your consent at any time.

How does it work?

Make a payment

To make a one-off or regular payment using an approved provider, you’ll need a Westpac transaction account. You’ll also need to log in to Westpac One® to approve the payment.

Share your bank account details

If you want to share your account information with an approved service provider, you’ll need to have an eligible Westpac account and approve the request by logging in to Westpac One.

For accounts with more than one account holder or interested party, we recommend keeping all parties informed of any account information sharing arrangements set up with a third-party provider.

View and manage your ongoing consents

You can view and manage consents you’ve given for ongoing payments or account information sharing in Westpac One®, on the Third Party Access page.

If your account has other holders or interested parties, they can view consents, but only the person who gave consent can make changes.

Is it secure?

Open banking includes safeguards to keep your information secure

Westpac uses a secure connection to share information with approved third-party providers who meet strict security standards and have passed thorough checks.

You’ll never need to give your username or password to a provider. Westpac will also never ask you to confirm or update your details through links in emails or texts.

What to check before sharing your data

Before sharing your account information with an approved provider, it’s a good idea to read their privacy and data use policy. This helps you understand how they’ll use and protect your data once they receive it.
