Westpac’s Te Waiu O Aotearoa Trust was established to promote, develop, and provide for the education and advancement of Māori within the banking, finance, and general business industries.

Westpac will also support the successful applicants with the opportunity to consider work experience during their holidays while they complete their degree.

RedNews connected with some of the Trust’s past scholarship recipients to find out how winning their scholarship helped them to grow and thrive, and why rangatahi should be inspired to apply.

Name:
Hine Markham- Nicklin (2016 Te Waiu O Aotearoa Trust scholarship recipient)

Hinemoana

Secondary School:
Motueka High School

Iwi affiliation:
Ngāti Kahungungu ki Wairoa, Ngāti Pahauwera

For Hine, being awarded the scholarship has helped her on a number of levels.

“Not only did it help me towards my goal of keeping my student loan low, but it also gave me the huge confidence boost that I needed to help me start my journey at University. I felt secure in my own ability to succeed and inspired to keep working at potential.”

Hine is set on having an exciting and dynamic career that allows her to experience a few different roles.

“Firstly I want to be a Lawyer. Then I want to work for the government and be prominent in politics. I also want to be an entrepreneur and start up my own business. Eventually I would like to become a business mentor for young Māori entrepreneurs, particularly focusing on helping them grow sustainable businesses from the idea to reality.”

Currently studying a double degree of Law and Commerce at Victoria University, Hine is keen to encourage
other rangatahi to apply for this scholarship because it gives such a great head start to university life.

“The Te Waiu O Aotearoa Trust scholarship goes beyond the $5000 monetary award. Along with the grant, the work opportunities and support that come along with it, motivated me to keep working at my best ability, and helped me 'get a foot' into the industry. All rangatahi who aspire to work in the business and finance industry, should most definitely apply.”
