It was a no brainer for Cantabrian Callum to put himself in the running for a fantastic travel package.
He’d just finished High School and was off to the University of Canterbury to study a Bachelor of Science when he saw the School Leavers promotion.
Callum shares his American adventure
Callum’s lived in Christchurch his whole life and his adventure overseas was the first time in the States, first time traveling alone, and just his second time leaving the country.
“I was away for a whole month, I left on the 7th of January and arrived back in New Zealand early morning on the 7th of February. Honestly, the whole trip was so amazing it's hard to pick a favourite part!
I flew with Air New Zealand into Los Angeles to begin a two week Topdeck tour the following morning. The service by Air New Zealand was great, they helped explain everything and made me feel at home during my first time traveling by myself.
First we went to LA, San Diego, Prescott and then the Grand Canyon.
After the Grand Canyon, the next stop was Zion National park where we walked through the valley in the morning.
Las Vegas was the next stop, where we stayed right on the strip, watched the Bellagio water fountain show and rode the High Roller roller coaster at sunset.
After Vegas we had a big drive all the way to South Lake Tahoe to snowboard at the Heavenly Ski-field. It was very cold at Tahoe and we nearly weren't able to leave due to another massive snowstorm. Luckily we made it over the pass and finally finished up in San Francisco our final destination on the Topdeck tour.
Once the Topdeck tour finished, I met my aunt and uncle in San Francisco and stayed with them for 2 weeks.
The highlight of the entire trip was Yosemite National Park. The place was covered in snow and it was just spectacular.
While in San Francisco I also visited Muir Woods National Park, Alcatraz and the Ano Nuevo elephant seal colony.
I made some great friends on the tour and had an absolutely amazing time in America! I visited truly breath-taking places which you really have to be there to appreciate, as my photos just don’t do them justice.”
