Settlement day checklist.

Settlement day is an exciting milestone. We know it can be a complex process so to make things easier, we’ve gathered helpful insights from our Westpac Home Loan Experts – who have supported thousands of customers through this important step.

Create a moving day checklist

A checklist will help you stay organised and ensure you don't forget any essential tasks or items as you move.

Organise childcare or pet care

Settlement day can be busy, so it’s helpful to arrange care for the kids or pets. This way, you can focus on the important tasks, like signing documents and picking up the keys, without any distractions.

Set up utilities beforehand

Make sure your electricity, gas, and internet are set up before moving day. This will ensure you can settle in comfortably without worrying about basic services. Even better, make sure they’re set for the date before, so you’re ready as soon as you walk in.

Take measurements of your new place

Measuring rooms and key areas in advance can help you plan where your furniture will go. This saves you time and effort on moving day.

Think about the little things

Don’t forget about essentials like toilet paper, snacks, and basic cleaning supplies. On settlement day, having these small items ready can help you feel at home in your new space right away.

Prepare your first night essentials

Pack a separate bag or box with everything you’ll need for the first night – bedding, toiletries, chargers, and a change of clothes. After a long day, you’ll appreciate having these items easily accessible.

Understanding how the transfer of funds works

It’s important to know the process as it may impact the timings of when you will receive your keys.

On settlement day, we’ll transfer the balance of funds for the purchase of your property to your solicitor. Your solicitor will then need to transfer these funds to the vendor’s solicitors, and they will transfer ownership of the property to you. Once this has all been completed, the keys and possession of the property are handed over to you by either your solicitor or the agent.

Find out your rubbish and recycling days

Check the rubbish and recycling schedule in your new area, and note any upcoming inorganic collection dates. Knowing this will start you off on the right foot.

Notify important contacts of your new address

Update your address and details with banks, NZTA, subscriptions, and other services to ensure you continue receiving important communications in your new home.

Set up a stress-free first dinner

Pack an easy-to-make meal on the first night, including the things you’ll need to make it. Or, treat yourself to some takeaways. You’ve earned it.
