The following criteria is compulsory for entry:

  • Must be a resident of Auckland or attend a school in Auckland.
  • Must be aged between 11 years old to 18 years old as at 31st December 2018 – age categories explained further below.

Age Categories

Films must be submitted within the following age categories as prizes will be determined accordingly (all ages are as at 31st December 2018):

  • 11 to 15 years’ old
  • 16 to 18 years’ old

All members of the production team for each film must fall within the age category for which the film is entered.

Consents and releases

Consent must be obtained and recorded on the attached form from a parent or caregiver for all actors appearing in films and producers of films submitted.

Where private property such as dairies, shops or cinemas are used for filming purposes, a release from the owner of that property is required. A release form is attached to this brief.

Initial brief submission

An initial brief of your film as an expression of interest must be submitted by email to besafefilmfestival@gmail.com by Friday 21st September 2018 using the attached form.

This brief should include:

  • A brief summary of the film
  • Which theme is being explored. 
  • Brief list of cast and crew (if decided)
  • Brief summary of how the film will be created i.e. what filming equipment method will be used.

Filming period

Once your brief has been reviewed and accepted, filming will commence from Friday 28th September 2018 until Sunday 14th October 2018. This is during the Term Three School Holiday Period.

All final film entries must be submitted on Monday 15th October 2018 by 11.59pm.

Films are to be uploaded onto Google Drive and then shared to besafefilmfestival@gmail.com with the setting “can edit” from Google Drive.

If New Zealand Police or Westpac New Zealand Limited (“Westpac”) are unable to run the competition or conduct the filming as planned, they may extend the entry or filming period, or postpone or cancel the competition. If so, a notice will be posted on Be Safe Film Festival.

Music and copyright rules

All music used within films must not breach copyright standards.

For those who wish to use music owned by New Zealand and/or International artists, you must have approval from the artist themselves prior to use.

Music owned by New Zealand and/or International artists that is played in the background of films accidentally/is incidental and not entwined into the theme of the film is acceptable i.e. a car driving past while filming that has music playing.

Music used from Royalty Free websites are acceptable as long as regulations from that site are adhered to.

Any film deemed to have music that has breached copyright will be disqualified from the film festival.

Ownership of Content

Ownership of the films remain with their producers.

Submission of the films for this competition confer full broadcast, reproduction and distribution rights to the New Zealand Police and Westpac to allow those organisations to use the films on their websites, social media feeds and for any reasonable use thereafter by these organisations including media releases and distribution.

Publication of your name and details

Entrants consent to their name being published on Facebook, media and NZ Police and Westpac social media sites, for promotional purposes relating to the competition.

Disqualification

An entrant may be disqualified for:

  1. tampering with the entry process;
  2. submitting an entry that is not in accordance with these terms and conditions; or
  3. engaging in any unlawful or improper conduct calculated to jeopardise the fair and proper conduct of the competition.

Selection of winners

Competition winners will be selected from the film entries received across the two aforementioned categories, additional prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the panel.

All decisions of the panel are final.

The winners will be notified via email on Friday 30 November 2018. If the winner is not reasonably able to be contacted by Monday 3 December 2018, the prize shall be forfeited and another winner shall be selected.

Prizes

The winners selected will receive prizes as follows:

In the senior category, there is one (1) prize for best film: is $2500 to the film maker(s) and $2500 to their school.

In the junior category, there is one (1) prize for best film: $1000 to the film maker(s) and $4000 to their school.

Publication of results

A prize giving ceremony may be held and the winners announced during this ceremony.

Competition results will be posted on social media channels and may be subject of a press release from the Auckland City District Police and Westpac. Entrants consent to their name and photo being posted on these platforms.

Collection of prizes

Specific instructions about collecting the prize will be outlined in the notification to the winner.

Privacy

Personal information provided by an entrant in submitting an entry into the Be Safe Feel Safe Film Festival will be used for the purpose of administering the competition and for any other purposes referred to in these terms and conditions.

Indemnity

By entering this competition you indemnify NZ Police/Westpac from and against all (including third party) costs, claims, liabilities, expenses and demands, suffered or incurred by the NZ Police/Westpac arising out of or incidental to these terms and conditions, the NZ Police/Westpac use and publication of your photo, and/or in respect of the competition.

If the entrant uses any material or elements in the film which are subject to the rights of a third party, the entrant must obtain prior to submission of the film, the necessary consents from such party to enable NZ Police/Westpac to use and showcase the film. Such consent(s) shall be at the expense of the entrant. A non-exhaustive list of such material or elements include: name, voice and likeness of any person appearing in the film, location shot e.g. specific building, any props and set dressings and any audio and/or audio-visual material which the entrant does not own.

Example Talent Release Forms is available on the competition website and in the NZ Police/Westpac Be Safe Film Festival Brief which may be used by entrants to obtain any necessary consents.

Consent must be obtained and recorded on the attached form from a parent or caregiver for all actors appearing in films and also the producers of films submitted.

The entrant agrees that NZ Police/Westpac (including their officers, employees and agents) shall not be liable for any claims, costs, liabilities, damages, expenses and losses arising out of (i) NZ Police/Westpac use of the film; (ii) the entrant’s participation in the competition or acceptance or use of any prize; (iii) technical failures of any kind including but not limited to problems or delays arising from software or equipment malfunctions or computer viruses; (iv) any events outside NZ Police/Westpac’s reasonable control. Nothing in this clause shall be construed to exclude or limit NZ Police/Westpac liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence or any other liability which by law cannot be excluded or limited.
