Westpac Business and Community Hub open for all

The Westpac Business and Community Hub has been officially opened providing further stimulus for economic growth in Christchurch.

The 2600 sqm business centre, adjacent to the CBS Arena, provides practical assistance to local quake impacted businesses. It includes free office space, broadband, photocopying, video conferencing, a corporate lounge and professional advice services.

While Christchurch business has proven resilient since the February quake, business remains tough with Paymark data showing electronic transactions in Christchurch are still down 7 percent from January.

More than 2,000 people, ranging from accountants and lawyers to fitness instructors, have used the Westpac Hub’s facilities already.

Westpac’s General Manager Business Banking Ian Blair says the Westpac Business and Community Hub is the result of delivering an initiative the community said it needed.

“The project is a direct result of what our customers told us they needed to get up and running again. It allows them to continue their operations and maintain relationships with suppliers and customers during the rebuilding of the city. The facility is available to all businesses, not just Westpac customers.”

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the initiative will help impacted businesses get back on their feet.

"What some Christchurch businesses have been missing are the basics - access to phones, broadband and meeting facilities. The Westpac Business Hub provides all of that support, and the interest shown in using it underlines the important role it will play for many in the city."

Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Peter Townsend says the Westpac Hub is an important step towards regenerating business activity in the region.

“Initiatives like the Hub are exactly what is needed to stimulate economic growth in Christchurch. For many it means they’re able to continue with day to day business which was made difficult, or near impossible, after the quakes.”

Partners of the Westpac Business and Community Hub include the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust, Fletcher Building, Gen-I, Meridian, Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.
