Westpac provides immediate relief for Christchurch earthquake victims

Westpac is immediately making available relief packages for customers impacted by today’s earthquake in Christchurch.

In addition, the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund, with $1 million, is available to provide practical assistance for those in need, working with the Salvation Army.

A special account has also been opened so New Zealanders can donate online and through branches nationwide to the Salvation Army. The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal account number is 03 0207 0617331 00.

The relief package for affected retail and business customers will include:

  • Temporary overdrafts
  • Repayment holidays on home loans
  • Relief from term deposit break costs
  • Refund of late payment fees

Westpac bankers have delegated authority to make local decisions for local people.

Regular updates will be available online at www.westpac.co.nz and via Twitter @WestpacNZ.

Westpac New Zealand Chief Executive George Frazis said:

“To the people of Christchurch: please know that the thoughts and support of all Westpac staff across the country are with you. We particularly give our condolences to those families who have lost loved ones.”
