Real estate is pumping as spring fever strikes – and even the rich and famous are not immune. Check out the extraordinary celebrity digs hitting the market.

Mansion: Impossible

You’ll need deep pockets if you want to live in the palatial mansion that Tom Cruise and ex-wife Katie Holmes shelled out $US30.5 million for in April 2007. It’s rumoured to be on the market for a sky high $US50 million.

Sources at Variety.com say the Hollywood heavyweight has floated his stately multi-winged Beverly Hills mansion as a super-secret pocket listing.

The heavily fortified .526-hectare spread boasts a roomy motor court with swimming-pool-sized fountain, a lighted tennis court with basketball hoops, a lap-length swimming pool, children’s playground and two guesthouses.

The three-time Oscar nominee and action-franchise superstar is clearly in the mood to cash up. His nearly 121 hectare, postcard-perfect estate outside Telluride is also available with a blistering $US59 million asking price.

High end fashion

Santo Versace’s four storey home in the heart of Italy’s Milan fashion district was built in the 1950s. It has a deeply stylish interior.

For a selling price of £41.6 million, or NZ$101.5m, you would expect something pretty amazing.

Local big spenders

Having completed a renovation to his clifftop Glendowie property that cost more than $30 million in 2013, New Zealand’s richest man Graeme Hart isn’t ready to sell. Instead he’s busy buying up neighbouring properties to expand his already extensive clifftop estate.

David Rainbow of Bayleys Real Estate is involved with many of New Zealand’s high profile homes and clients. He confirms many of his clients are adding to their homes. There’s massive construction happening in central Auckland and some amazing homes are for sale.  But you won’t hear about them, says Rainbow, “because New Zealanders are a secretive lot and prefer to fly under the radar”.

One well-known couple not keeping under wraps is Kim and Erica Crawford who sold their wine brand Kim Crawford Wines for $18 million in 2003. Their 1034m2 Remuera property featuring a Vernon Brown designed home is selling for upwards of $5 million.

Legend worthy apartment

It’s no secret Chrissy Teigen and Oscar winning crooner, John Legend are trying for a baby, and you can check out the once-secret seduction scene because their New York apartment is on the market.

They bought the place three years ago for $US2.5 million. It’s now selling for a sweet $4.5 million.

McDreamy home

Swoon-worthy Greys Anatomy actor Patrick Dempsey and his wife Jillian Dempsey are selling their laid-back Malibu home designed by Frank Gehry who also just designed Facebook’s new headquarters in Menlo Park.

They’re asking $US14.5 million for the Tin House that recently featured in Architectural Digest magazine. The 515m2 home sits on three acres overlooking the ocean.

Jenny’s block

But it’s not all love and roses for some celebrity couples who are clearly struggling as they try to ditch their marital acquisitions.

No fewer than two mansions formerly owned by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are for sale. In addition to a $US17million, nine bedroom estate in the gated California community of Hidden Hills, the former couple’s home on Long Island’s Gold Coast is also on the market. The asking price is $US9.495 million. That’s after a price cut – not long ago, it was listed at $US12 million.

Lopez and Anthony lived in the home until announcing their separation in 2011. The compound has two homes and 10 bedrooms on 3.23 hectares.

Does sexy sell?

Once voted the sexiest man alive, actor Ryan Reynolds is hoping for third-time lucky as he tries to sell his Hollywood Hills home in the celebrity packed neighbourhood of Outpost Estates.

Reynolds bought the home for $US1.715 million before his marriage to actress Scarlett Johansson. The two didn’t live there. Instead they moved to the mid-century “Wong House,” which they sold after divorcing for $3.5 million.

While Reynolds and Johansson were married, Reynolds tried to sell the home, first listing it in 2009 — not the hottest year for real estate – then in 2011 for $1.69 million. When he married Gossip Girl starlet Blake Lively, he took it off the market. Now it’s back on again for a snip at $1.599 million.

Bull seeing red

A home with a garage for 14 cars, a full-size basketball court, a high tech fitness gym and original doors from the Playboy mansion – now who could that be?

The 5202m2 home of Michael Jordan in Highland Park, a wealthy suburb of Chicago first listed in 2012 for $US29 million. The price was reduced to $US21 million about a year later.

In late 2013, it dropped to $US13 million but again failed to sell. The estate’s most recent price is $US14.855 million, about half the original.

Forbes magazine says the house isn’t selling because it’s overpriced for the neighbourhood. Such phone number prices are generally reserved for downtown Chicago.

Moore for less

Not every Hollywood celebrity lives in a rambling mansion. Oscar winning actress Julianne Moore is selling her 92m2 cabin on a pond in the surfy hamlet of Montauk, New York for just $US3.495 million.

The 3-bedroom, 1-bath home has been fully restored and the 0.27 hectare property is landscaped for privacy. With a starring role in the upcoming movie Freeheld, the actress won’t have much time for the island-style hideaway.
