Victoria Cross for New Zealand recipient Willie Apiata has partnered with Westpac to develop a youth leadership programme for New Zealand’s up-and-coming leaders.
Willie was a corporal in the New Zealand Special Air Service, and Westpac want to help him pass his knowledge and experiences on to the next generation.
He received the Victoria Cross for New Zealand on July 2, 2007 for bravery under fire during the Afghanistan conflict in 2004, in which he carried a gravely wounded comrade across a battlefield, under fire, to safety.
In July 2012 Willie left full-time military service to teach adventure skills to young people at the High Wire Charitable Trust in Papakura Auckland.
He was welcomed with a Powhiri at Westpac on Takutai Square alongside other Westpac employees who have served in the military at a formal ceremony led by Ngati Whatua Kaumatua, Matt Maihi.
Acting CEO David McLean addressed attendees in a mihi after the Pounamu Kapa Haka group took to the floor with a haka and song.
