Last year 12 brave and slightly crazy swimmers took to the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, swimming the 20km from Waiheke Island to Auckland to raise money for Chopper.
Their mammoth effort paid off with a mammoth result, raising over $35,000!
This year, they are going even bigger with 40 swimmers taking to the water at first light on 21 March, supported by 22 kayakers and 15 motorboats. The aim is not to race, but to exceed last year’s donations.
This ultra-distance swim between the island and the city perfectly illustrates the importance of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Waiheke, which accounts for almost a third of all Chopper missions in Auckland. It’s a massive physical and mental challenge for all of us, regardless whether we tackle the swim solo or in a team.”
For a taste of what this swim entails, here’s a video from last year’s swim.
