Those travelling on State Highway 1 between Amberley and Invercargill this week could more than likely come in contact with a convoy of 25 veteran tractors.

The Southern Tractor Trekkers and support crew of 20 departed Invercargill on March 12 embarking on a journey around the South Island to raise $100,000 for the Westpac Chopper Appeal.

Starting from the Westpac Windsor Branch in Invercargill, the 25 tractor enthusiasts will travel more than 2,100kms over 16 days at an average speed of 25 kms per hour.

The Southern Trekkers decided on the Westpac Chopper Appeal as most of them live in rural areas and a number are rural firefighters. The rescue chopper provides a vital service should they have some kind of accident.

Westpac have been supporting the group along the way with each branch hosting the 25 tractors to allow the local community to come and see them and donate money to the Appeal.

Some of the key stops so far have been Wanaka, Hokitika, Greymouth, and Westport.

Upcoming stops include:

-  Geraldine, 9am 25 March
-  Gore, 3pm 27 March
-  Invercargill, 1pm 28 March (finish line)

Funds can also be donated on line at or at any Westpac Branch.

The group of 45 are paying for all travel and accommodation cost themselves.
