The brain behind the Mo card

Westpac’s Movember EFTPOS cards have caught the eyes of many Kiwis. And with a limited number of cards in each branch, people are having to be quick to grab one before they run out.

If you've got one, you can thank Jamie Root, the 20 year old Aucklander who helped come up with the idea at a brainstorming session in Westpac’s Jamie Root Photoideation lab, The Garage.

“I was thinking about ways to make EFTPOS cards appealing to under 19s, and I remembered the idea that Coca Cola had with their summer cans and people bought them because they were cool.

“I started thinking of ideas and I remember my manager was sipping a moustache mug and thought why couldn't you put that on a moustache card and people could do the same thing and take a selfie?”

Jamie is a naturally gifted and promising artist, and keen to turn his talent to a career.

“I have an eye for drawing, I’m really passionate about it. I can draw people, animals, anything really.

“Originally I wanted to incorporate that into a career in architecture, but after studying for a whole year it was a bit different to what I expected.”

Now turning his attention towards marketing, Jamie says he wants a career where his artistic ability and ideas can flourish.

Though there is one other job we would prefer.

“If I could pick absolutely anything, I’d be football manager for Arsenal.  I have such a passion for football and supporting Arsenal is something of a family tradition.”

As anyone would, Jamie gets a buzz from seeing people respond positively to his work, such as sketches he creates for friends.

“When they post it up on Instagram and people are like ‘Wow that’s so cool’ and seeing the comments it just makes me feel good.

“It was cool when I saw all the Twitter posts about the Movember card and saying it’s such a good idea, and knowing that it’s going around New Zealand.

“It’s gone from selling my drawings to my friends to now something that’s actually a big deal to me personally. It’s a great personal achievement for my age.”
