Westpac’s Te Waiu O Aotearoa Trust was established to promote, develop, and provide for the education and advancement of Māori within the banking, finance, and general business industries.

Westpac will also support the successful applicants with the opportunity to consider work experience during their holidays while they complete their degree.

RedNews connected with some of the Trust’s past scholarship recipients to find out how winning their scholarship helped them to grow and thrive, and why rangatahi should be inspired to apply.

Secondary School:
Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae, based in Māngere, South Auckland.

Iwi affiliation:
Proud descendent of Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Whātua and Kai Tahu

South Auckland based Kimihia says winning the scholarship has been not only a huge honour for herself, but her family and her school as well.

“It’s also been a big financial help in my pursuit of tertiary life, but overall it has inspired me to work hard to achieve my goals and dreams.”

Her future aspirations include, “Working in a managerial or a chief executive role of a company that lacks Māori influence, and then eventually in the further future I would love to return to my hometown in the hope of creating more jobs and stable lives for my people.

Kimihia is currently studying a conjoint degree in Business and Communications at AUT (Auckland University of Technology).

She says the scholarship is great for young rangatahi who have a strong desire to pursue a tertiary life.
