The return of Super Rugby may be the shot in the arm local economies are looking for.
Data from Dunedin on the weekend that live Super Rugby returned showed a windfall for local hospitality businesses according to analysis from Westpac NZ.
Westpac NZ Customer Experience Hub General Manager Karen Silk says spending on debit and credit cards soared at bars and clubs on June 13, with transaction volumes far outstripping any other day in the past six months, including New Year’s Eve.
“There were 292% more transactions at these businesses than the Saturday before, and 160% more than the Saturday in March when Six60 played a hometown gig.
“This analysis illustrates just how commercially significant it can be for businesses when a big event comes to town, especially at the moment given the effect of the lockdown on trading.
“Across the season these games will be pumping millions into local economies.”
Ms Silk says Westpac continues to develop new ways to analyse customer behaviour.
“We use these tools to better understand our customers and their spending patterns so we can help cater to their future needs.”
She says the data draws on transactional debit and credit card data from Westpac customers and merchant data from Westpac businesses, to provide a representative sample of all consumer card spending.
