South Island SMEs get digital jump start

As the Business Growth Grants roadshow rolls out, 2 South Island small businesses have already had a $10,000 digital jump start.

Westpac is hosting four forums across the country as it rolls out the $250,000 Business Growth Grant programme in conjunction with RadioLive and TV3 broadcaster Duncan Garner’s Grass Roots Road Trip. At each Business After 5 forum, business owners can win a $10,000 digital marketing package from Ora by saying where they want to take their business digitally.

Your People Recruitment, Otago

In 2008 Your People Recruitment Limited was a business start-up with no collateral and no clients – just an idea and plenty of determination. Now, they employ nearly 50 staff and are eyeing opportunities beyond Dunedin.

With the help of the digital marketing package, owner Warwick McArthur plans to re-fresh the brand online and explore how to leverage social media and other online channels to improve the experience for their candidates and clients.

“It was an enormous privilege to win this package and the Ora award will allow us to take our business to the next level,” Mr McArthur said.

Green Fuels, Canterbury

In Christchurch, biofuel distributor Green Fuels was selected. They manufacture Biogold™ branded biodiesel made from 100% recycled vegetable oil.

The company began when Martin Johnson (Managing Director), along with a few others who were in management positions at Solid Energy, purchased the biodiesel manufacturing assets from Biodiesel New Zealand Ltd (which was part of Solid Energy).

Since then, Green Fuels has been targeting businesses such as the Christchurch City Council, Fulton Hogan, fishing boats and businesses working on the Christchurch rebuild.

Long term, Martin sees opportunities to expand the business beyond Canterbury and the digital marketing package will enable that to happen sooner than planned.

Going from the corporate world to a more hand on role has been a fun challenge for Martin.

“I had a lot of work to do once we formed Green Fuels NZ Ltd, including ‘downskilling’ and retraining in some areas, such as getting my trucking licence to be able to make product deliveries."

Martin says the Ora digital marketing package will be used in growing awareness of their business, product, and sales. In particular, Martin really wants to get their message out there more and thinks he can do that by updating their current website and looking at other digital channels as a medium to do so.
