Beyond the snow: How Snowplanet are always innovating and evolving

Snowplanet is the only all-year indoor snow resort in Australasia, where guests can experience the thrill of snow sports and the atmosphere of a snow village 365 days of the year.

Snowplanet  won the Supreme Business Excellence Award at Westpac Auckland Business Awards – North in 2017.

Its giant snowdome features 50 centimetres of real powder snow, three lifts, a terrain park for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, and a separate learner’s slope for beginners or those who haven't touched snow before.

Snowplanet Sales and Marketing GM John Howsam has witnessed the changes throughout his years at the snow park.

“Snowplanet is 13 years old. When it first started, people could only choose skiing or snowboarding.

“Nowadays, people can enjoy a full day experience with the entire family and have a go at skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, tobogganing, take a lesson or simply watch everyone else from the warmth of the fireside in our restaurant.

“We also offer programmes for corporates and schools. Apart from that, we run birthday parties, late night promotions, Santa on the snow at Christmas, and so much more because we are always trying to expand our offers to customers.”

“We are growing every year and we are very proud that we had 155,000 visitors last year,” Mr. Howsam said, “which puts us in the top 4 resorts position in the country.”

“At the same time, we are busy at appealing to diverse audiences in our community. I think we’ve done a pretty good job.

“If you look at our school holiday program right now, you can see a lot of Asian students.  We are very proud of that as we are trying to be as inclusive to as many sectors of our community as possible. Last year, we created our own WeChat official account and also introduced Alipay to embrace the new cashless payment technology.”

Snowplanet is also focused on developing new technologies to improve the experience at the park.

“We are thinking of launching self-check-in kiosks for customers in the near future. We are in the development phase of offering a VR experience for people who don’t want to go on the snow, are scared to go on the snow or not capable.”

In Snowplanet’s restaurant there is a hologram chef who interacts with diners on their tabletop.

“We’ve got a very unique dining experience called Le Petite Chef. We’ve got this little chef, he wanders around the table and uses a very special technique to cook the food, and then the food magically gets brought and served on your plate.

“There are only five others of these around the world and we are the only one in the Southern Hemisphere.”
