How it works.

When you applied for Westpac Bill Protection, you chose a monthly benefit amount of $500, $750 or $1,000. This is what you think you'll need to cover your monthly bills. Then:

If you’re unable to work because of disability

If you’re unable to work more than 10 hours a week due to injury or illness, you could be paid your monthly benefit for up to 24 months, backdated to the first day that you were unable to work. You must be totally disabled for 30 days before you can claim, however this requirement is waived if you claim more than once for the same condition. You must be working at least 25 hours a week in paid employment or in paid self-employment, at the time you stop work or seek medical advice.

If you’re made redundant

Bill Protection could pay out your benefit if you’re made involuntarily redundant. Payments start after 30 days of unemployment, backdated to the first day of redundancy, and can continue for up to six months. You must be working at least 25 hours a week in paid employment, at the date you stopped work.

If you’re made bankrupt

Bill Protection could pay out your benefit if you’re working at least 25 hours in self-employment and are made bankrupt. Payments can start immediately and can continue for up to six months. Your cover must have been in place for at least six months.


No medical information was required when you applied

There were no medical questions to answer when you applied. Acceptance was automatic. However you won't be covered for any medical condition that existed in the 24 months prior to, or which arises within 28 days from, the commencement date.

Suspend your cover if you need to

You can suspend your cover one time, for a continuous period of up to 12 months. You can't make a claim during this period and any injury, illness, redundancy or bankruptcy that arises within the suspension period won't be covered.

Take a premium holiday while you claim

Premiums for your policy will be waived while you're on claim (up to a maximum of $300 per month).

Disability benefit paid out on top of any ACC payment

The monthly payment you receive stays at the level you selected, even if you’re receiving payments from ACC, or payments from another insurance provider.

Payments flexibility

Choose a payment option to match your pay days. You can pay your premium fortnightly or monthly.

30-day free look

During our 30-day free look period, if you decide the cover is not for you, just notify us and we’ll refund any premiums you’ve paid.
