Card security FAQs

What if someone says they’re from Westpac and asks for my PIN or bank account details?

We will never ask for your confidential information over the phone or email. If someone does ask for this sort of information, you should report the call to us immediately on 0800 400 600.

Why do I still need a PIN?

Not every retailer accepts contactless payments, so there are still going to be times when you’re going to have to make payments by swiping or inserting your card into the terminal, then using your PIN. Contactless payments are capped at the local country limit per transaction in New Zealand, so if your transaction is over this amount you will still be asked to enter a PIN. Note that the cap varies in different countries.

Will I still get a receipt?

If the EFTPOS terminal has a printer, you’ll receive a receipt if you want it. Some new terminals don’t print receipts but you can request this to be sent to you electronically (via email).

How do I know if a shop accepts contactless payments?

The screen on the EFTPOS terminal will tell you with words like ‘present card’ as opposed to swipe/insert card. You might also notice the contactless symbol on the terminal screen.

Is there a limit to how much I can spend using contactless payments?

Contactless payments without a PIN are capped at the local country limit per transaction in New Zealand, but this varies depending on which country you’re in. You can make multiple contactless transactions in one day provided you have the credit limit or funds available.
