Westpac EasyID Frequently asked questions

Westpac EasyID is a digital tool that uses biometric facial recognition to identify and confirm that you are you. This means you could open either a Westpac Everyday account with a debit card or a Simple Saver account online quickly, simply and securely from wherever you are, without the need to visit a branch. 

We want to give you choice, and make life easier for you. If you want to open an account with us (Westpac Everyday account with a debit card or a Simple Saver account), you can do this securely and quickly online, using Westpac EasyID. Of course, if you’d prefer to open your account in a branch, you can still do that. 

The security of your data is of the utmost importance to us. The tool prompts you to take a quick video selfie, and then uses biometric facial recognition technology to scan your face comparing the footage you’ve taken with your photo ID (NZ driver licence or NZ passport). We have partnered with trusted external providers to authenticate your photo ID.

We understand that your biometric data is highly sensitive personal identifiable information. As part of this process, we don't keep a copy of the video or any biometric data generated from it once the match has taken place.

In some circumstances, we may be unable to verify your address, in which case you will be asked to visit a branch to show proof of your address. You may also be asked to visit a branch if we require extra information for your profile – for example, if we hold a duplicate customer record. If this happens, please make sure you bring your NZ driver licence or NZ passport to the branch to help complete the identification process.

Please complete the following process:

1. Close the Westpac EasyID browser

2. Re-open the browser (using Chrome or Safari) and try the process again following the Westpac EasyID prompts

3. If you’re still experiencing issues, you’ll need to visit a Westpac branch, or phone us on 0800 400 600.

If you don’t have your IRD number handy while opening your account, your tax rate will automatically default to 33%. You can update your tax rate at any time by logging into Westpac One online banking. This will be under ‘Profile’ then ‘Tax ‘Details’.

You’ll need your Tax Identification number to open a New Zealand bank account. If you’re a US citizen you could also use your Employer Identification or Social Security number instead.

Unless you fall under the following conditions, you’ll need to go into branch:

NZ Passport:

  • Under 65 years of age, must be current or expired within the last 2 years.
  • 65 and over, must be current or expired within the last 10 years.

NZ Driver Licence

  • Under 65 years of age, must be current.
  • 65 and over, must be current or expired within the last 10 years

If you don't receive this password or don't remember to use it within the seven days, you'll need to visit a branch so they can reset your password.
