About Government Business

Westpac became banker to the New Zealand Government in 1989. Since then we have established and grown a dedicated Government Business team, providing for the day-to-day banking needs of each government department.

In addition to meeting Government's everyday banking, we are continuously reviewing the way we deliver practical and strategic solutions to support the New Zealand Government in achieving its stated business objectives. This has seen a broadening in our focus with our key priorities including…

  • Providing technological leadership in banking services and payment systems to ensure the New Zealand Government can operate as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
  • Fostering a greater understanding of individual department's specific business objectives and the impact to proposed structural changes in the public sector.
  • Encouraging greater participation in government policy formulation where there is strategic alignment, e.g. supporting the Government's programme for business development from incubation onwards.

A little about Westpac New Zealand

As one of New Zealand's largest banks, Westpac plays a major part in the lives of many of the nation's constituents. Westpac is the market leader in New Zealand with 1.3 million customers and more than 40,000 New Zealand shareholders. (Oct 2002)

Westpac provides a full range of retail and commercial financial services including home and business lending, funds management and treasury services. We also offer a range of financial services to our corporate and institutional customers through Westpac Institutional Bank, including finance, mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, financial markets, transaction and international trade services.

Westpac has over 6,000 staff, approximately 200 branches and over 600 ATM's nationwide, as well as call centres and 24-hour phone banking services.

Supporting New Zealand

Westpac is committed to improving the quality of life of a broad range of New Zealanders through our active support of a variety of organisations, services and facilities from the Westpac Rescue Helicopters and the Sir Peter Blake Trust and the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

We also share the Government's enthusiasm for New Zealand's regions, and like government, recognise that regional growth and greater connectivity across and within sectors are critical factors in ensuring New Zealand's success in a global environment.

Just one of the ways that Westpac supports regional business is by working with Chambers of Commerce, enterprise and industry associations to support regional business awards. We sponsor specific industry awards, e.g. Franchise awards, and the NZ Dairy Industry Awards - and offer a free comprehensive banking review to all our agribusiness and business customers.
