My two daughters aged seven and four are already volunteering advice to me on many topics. I have no doubt when their teenage years arrive they will be telling me how to live in a modern world, not vice versa. Here's my chance to get in first. Three things I have learnt along the way that I think will be just as relevant in tomorrow's world as today's.
- Find your passion: Going to work is easy when you are doing something you enjoy, hopefully love, doing. I get immense pleasure from my job which I have no doubt has been a contributor to my success. If you are not enjoying your work have a think about whether it's the environment you are working in. If it's not your environment but really is your job have a think about what you enjoy doing in your current job. Can that lead you in a new direction?
- Try some disobedient thinking: I first heard this phrase recently at the Kea World Class New Zealand Awards. Award winner Geraldine McBride referred to disobedient thinking in her acceptance speech as the winner of the Information and Communications Award. This is about feeling free to challenge the status quo, push the envelope, come up with new ideas for doing things. Why not? What have you got to lose? In the words of Steve Jobs "Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in square holes...the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things...they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
- Choose carefully the Man or Woman in Your Life: Spend time with a partner who is supportive and understands you. Someone who believes in your dreams however big or small they may be!
