Win a full dining experience for 2 at one of NZ’s top restaurants

When it comes to world-class cuisine, visual aesthetic and a full dining experience, Clooney has made a name for itself as one of the country’s top restaurants.

The Auckland restaurant opened its doors in 2006 and has gone on to win a raft of industry accolades and awards from the likes of Cuisine, Metro and the Lewisham Foundation, firmly establishing itself as a market leader in our hospitality industry.

Owner, Tony Stewart, started his first restaurant in Invercargill at the age of 20 and has been involved in a number of highly-successful bars and restaurant start-ups over the past 25 years.

He says he wanted Clooney to be something quite unique with a strong focus on the dining experience choosing an industrial warehouse as the skeleton for his creative venture.

“I wanted something that held atmosphere, and was new but timeless in a lot of respects. Food is all about texture and layers, something I believe the warehouse retains."

Tony says along with its strong aesthetic, the food and presentation are paramount factors to the Clooney experience.

“When we’re creating a dish we will actually bring it out into the restaurant and under the right light to see how it is presented. A lot of that is to do with the styles of plates and things we use. We’re constantly trying to develop our pallet of plates to keep things interesting."

With food weaving throughout and binding the overall experience together, the hospitality veteran says they would never use anything that was held back and out of season.

“Some countries need to do this but in New Zealand there’s no reason for it.

“We very much look for mid-pallet where the length of the flavour or taste stays with you.”

He says New Zealanders are understanding their own pallets a lot more and becoming more adventurous which is only playing more and more into the style of dining Clooney offers.

“I think the best thing that’s happening to Auckland is the amount of restaurants that have come on line. As much as it has fragmented the market, it’s also introduced a hell of a lot more people to the market."

Tony believes New Zealand is progressing as a culinary destination and has a huge amount of potential - it’s about finding our story.

“I think in general we are lucky because there is more of a focus coming to the South Pacific. Australia has been good for New Zealand because their profile is lifting hugely.

“I don’t think there’s one industry that moves and changes as much as ours because every person coming through that door will perceive us differently – they see, taste and experience things completely different.

He says he’s proud of what they’ve achieved over the past 10 years and the restaurant’s continual progression which is something Tony is hugely in favour of.

“We’ve never sat on our laurels and allowed ourselves to be complacent - we’ve continuously evolved and with that comes better food, better service, and a better experience in general.
