Last year Westpac NZ became one of the first companies in New Zealand to be awarded the Rainbow Tick, and the very first to get it on the first attempt.
Now they are proud to announce they have been awarded it again for 2015.
Marked against criteria based on international best practice for the second year running, being awarded the Tick is recognition for work being done to create an authentic open and inclusive working environment.
Leading the way in diversity and inclusiveness
Westpac has not sat on their laurels since receiving the first Rainbow Tick. In October 2014, they commissioned a survey with Nielsen to better understand the banking needs of the Rainbow Community and how those needs are being met. This created the platform to have an open dialogue at a Round Table with businesses, tertiary providers, and diversity leaders on societal change and workplace challenges.
Over the past year, new initiatives have included a hugely successful It Gets Better video featuring members of staff sharing their personal stories about how although there were tough times on their life journey, it always gets better. The video has had over 113,000 views via social media.
Strong commitment from senior leadership who champion inclusiveness alongside a group of passionate volunteers has contributed to positive internal change.
We’re open, are you?
Michael Stevens, programme director at Rainbow Tick, says, “The thing that stands out about Westpac’s approach to the Rainbow Tick has been how thoroughly the bank has worked to implement it, not just as a brand but the ethos of it.
“This is reflected in a range of things from the ‘We’re open, are you?’ campaign to the It Gets Better video that staff made.
“It is clear that Westpac’s leadership take the Rainbow Tick message seriously, and that approach is being displayed through the organisation.”
Westpac’s dedication to inclusion also saw them named Diversity Leader of the Year at the prestigious Deloitte TOP 200 Awards in November.
A GLOBAL achievement
David Birrell, co-chair of GLOBAL, Westpac’s LGBTI Employee Action Group (EAG), says he is proud to be a part of this energetic EAG.
“Over half of the areas assessed have been rated as improved from last year which is a reflection of the hard work from the GLOBAL team, the support from the executive team, and the efforts of our Ally Network who are so willing to assist with any projects that we take on.
“The big areas of improvement since last year have been in Staff Engagement, External Engagement and Organisational Development.”
