Unforgettable outside the box holiday destinations

Rome. Bangkok. New York. Paris. All perfectly good holiday destinations. But for those who like their holiday slideshow to be a little more unique, you’ve got to think a bit outside the box.

Here are 5 unforgettable holiday destinations you may not have considered.

Norway

Norway

If there is a country that may rival New Zealand’s crown as the most beautiful, it’s Norway.

The fjords on the west coast are simply amazing and begging to be hiked, cycled, and kayaked. But if you want something more unique, try heading up north a bit to the Lofoten Islands with its amazing fjords and Viking history.

And the long days make for some stunning “night” activities, including golf and kayaking bathed in the golden midnight sun.

If you’re feeling even more adventurous, go even closer to the North Pole to the icy Svalbard Islands, with glaciers, polar bears, dogsledding trips, and the Aurora Borealis just some of the highlights.

Montenegro

Montenegro

This tiny, tiny country located between Albania and Croatia is a beautiful destination, filled with amazing architecture and a rich history.

While most tourists head to Budva, the quieter coastal town (and UNESCO world heritage site) of Kotor is possibly a better destination with its walled fortress and stunning scenery.

Other activities to check out include white water rafting and kayaking in the Tara River Canyon, hiking the Lovcen National park, and swimming in the crystal clear water of Perast.

Sichuan, China

Sichuan, China

Get away from the more well-known tourist destinations such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army, and instead head inland a bit to this region with plenty of attractions.

The region is famous for two things in particular: spicy food and pandas (the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is in the region’s largest city, Chengdu).

But they also have the Leshan Giant Buddha, a 233 foot tall Buddha carved into the mountainside in the 8th century, and Jiuzhaigou Valley, a remote region covering over 180,000 acres and featuring  Tibetan villages and beautiful multi-level waterfalls with colourful lakes.

Peru

Peru

With beaches, deserts, rainforest, and mountains, the Peruvian scenery is dramatic and diverse, and holds appeal for both adventure and relaxation seekers.

Some highlights include cruising on Lake Titicaca, South America’s largest lake; exploring one of the most biodiverse parks in the world in Manu National Park, and of course conquering Macchu Picchu.

The nation’s diverse cultural makeup has also helped it, and Lima in particular, become one of the most famous food destinations in the world, with San Pellegrino’s global restaurant rankings for 2016 listing 3 of the top 5 Latin American restaurants there.

Plus: llamas and alpacas!

Tanzania

Tanzania

From its gorgeous beaches on the Indian Ocean coast, to the awe inspiring Mt Kilimanjaro on the Serengeti Plains, Tanzania is one of Africa’s best tourist destinations.

For nature lovers, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. It’s also home to elephants, hippopotamus, and lions.

A short boat trip off the coast is the idyllic island Zanzibar, with white sandy beaches, coral reefs, turquoise blue ocean, and some of the best snorkel and scuba diving in the world.
