How creative can you be with 50 pairs of red socks? This is the challenge students from 15 schools around the country faced as part of a competition to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sir Peter Blake’s Red Socks Day on 3 July.

A milestone celebration

It’s been 20 years since Sir Peter Blake pulled on a humble pair of red socks and took on the most powerful teams in the world to win one of the oldest and most coveted sporting trophies, The America’s Cup.

To celebrate this milestone, the Westpac School’s Photo Competition tasked students to come up with quirky activities using 50 pairs of red socks during Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week (29 June to 3 July).

The school with the most imaginative photo capturing their creation will win an Apple iPad Air, and will be announced on Monday, 20 July.

A week of great leadership

The 2015 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week asked New Zealand to celebrate leadership using the theme, “Believe you can”.

The week began with the prestigious Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards and closed with a celebration of leadership on Red Socks Day.

As the Foundation Partner of the Sir Peter Blake Trust, Westpac had 129 Bank Managers involved in the Young Leader Awards presentations in 337 schools, and 30 of its leaders joined the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s Dream Team to give inspirational talks to students.

Passing on Peter's values to our future leaders

Westpac National Sponsorship and Events Manager, Tracey Grant, says the photo competition has offered students a chance to display leadership, teamwork, and positive comradery which are all qualities that Sir Peter Blake was known for.

“It’s a fun way to remember and celebrate a Kiwi icon and everything he stood for, which is now being passed on and instilled in our future generation of leaders. The students have done a great job working together and we're looking forward to seeing what the winning photo captured.”
