On November 30 2015, 13-year-old Jazmin stopped breathing. Around New Zealand asthma affects 1 in 4 children – one of the highest rates in the world.
Unconscious with no pulse, her step-dad Darryl and a neighbour immediately started CPR. Their actions kept Jazmin alive, but she was still in a serious condition - knowing CPR can help save a life.
With every second critical, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in.
Juliet was the Intensive Care Paramedic on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter that day, on shift with crewman Wayne.
They knew they had to get Jazmin to hospital as quickly as possible. It’s in medical emergencies like this that a quick response from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter can make all the difference – every second counts.
By road it would take over an hour and in many rural areas intensive care paramedics are not available. Thanks to the Air Rescue crew Jazmin was at Christchurch Hospital 20 minutes later.
They say asthma is the silent killer. And when time is everything, the Chopper is often the only lifeline for kids like Jazmin. That’s why we need your help – to safeguard their future, and give them the time to breathe.
Last year the choppers helped over 7590 people throughout New Zealand. Now you can help.
Secure your spot on The People’s Chopper
New Zealand’s rescue helicopters rely on donations from everyday people. So this Chopper Appeal, we want to give you a spot on the side of a rescue helicopter to recognise your support.
Everyone who donates online at chopperappeal.co.nz during May will have the unique opportunity to upload their Facebook profile picture and we’ll print it on one of NZ’s rescue helicopters, making it The People’s Chopper.
The People’s Chopper will be around for New Zealand to check out throughout June, including at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek. You can also look out for photos and video of The People’s Chopper on Facebook and Instagram.
Donations for the 2016 Westpac Chopper Appeal can be made:
• at any Westpac Branch
• on the web at chopperappeal.co.nz to get your Facebook profile picture printed on the side of The People’s Chopper
Westpac is the principal sponsor of the Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Canterbury Westpac rescue helicopters. The annual Westpac Chopper Appeal helps raise funds for all regional rescue helicopter services around New Zealand.
