Lee-Anne Wann: Christmas rush exercise anywhere guide

The Christmas rush has to be one of the hardest times to keep up with our exercise routines and good habits. Every other day seems to be Christmas drinks, staff parties, drinks with friends, morning tea shouts, last minute dashes to the shops, trips to see Santa, trips to the shops again and again.

Below are some great little tips and tricks that will help keep you active, on top of those little things and assist in keeping your stress levels in check.

STUCK AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS?

Every time you reach a set of lights and they are red, instead of cursing them for making you late, praise them for giving you 60 seconds to perform a great abdominal exercise.

Simply perform an abdominal brace (tighten your abs), hold for 3 seconds and release, exhaling slowly while you do. Keep going until the lights change green.

NO PARKING AT THE MALL?

No need to get angry, it’s actually perfect as you get the chance to do an extra 10 or so minutes of walking which will reduce stress and add to that daily calorie burn.

While walking try shrugging your shoulders up and then relaxing them down, complete 4 to 5 times to remove tension in the neck and upper back.

ESCALATOR PACKED?

No worries, use the time to do some calf raises.

Just stand normally and then raise yourself onto your toes, hold for 1 to 2 seconds and lower again, repeat until you get to the end. This is even better if you have a few shopping bags in each hand.

NO TIME TO MAKE IT TO THE GYM?

Short on time in the morning, try running as hard as you can on the spot for 60 seconds followed by a lunge or squat for 60 seconds – do 3 to 4 times and you will really break a sweat.

Do the same thing again at lunchtime or after work replacing the lunge or squat with press ups or triceps dips.

STUCK AT A WORK FUNCTION?

Try doing pelvic floor exercises. No this does not mean you have to get on the floor, in fact no one will ever know you are doing them.

Simply tighten your pelvic muscles holding for 3 to 4 seconds and then release (this is the same feeling as wanting to urinate but stopping it from happening).

LUGGING SHOPPING BAGS?

Wow what a great time to work those arms. Use each bag as a weight and bend your arms from straight performing a bicep curl and lower again, try doing 10-12 each side.

If you bags are uneven, swap them over so you use the same weight. This is great for toning your arms.
