Sustainable supply chain

Our goal
To ensure that our top 20 suppliers meet our Sustainable Supply Chain Code of Conduct by 2012.
How are we doing so far?
We've reviewed our approach to sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). We include an assessment tool with supporting materials to help suppliers along the sustainability journey.
Why does this matter?
Increased consumer awareness of environmental issues has led to increased demand for organizations that can supply socially and environmentally responsible products, without compromising the welfare of their employees.
We can provide real leadership to ensure acceptable standards are adopted by those we work with. By encouraging our suppliers to work in a more sustainable way, we aim to reduce the environmental and social impact of our businesses, whilst helping to reduce costs.
What is Westpac doing right now?
Westpac works with a large number of suppliers such as airlines, suppliers of computer systems, uniforms, car fleet partners and advertising agencies. We have set a goal to seek suppliers who share our commitment to best practices and continuous improvement in
ethical business practices
management practices that respect the rights of employees and the local community
minimising our impact on the environment
providing a safe and healthy work place.
We're working with Business New Zealand to develop best practice sustainable supply chain guidelines, for businesses in New Zealand.
We currently ask our suppliers to state their sustainability credentials and aim to meet with them regularly to discuss and share best practice in sustainability.
