Bill protection cover

If you suddenly couldn’t work because of an injury, illness, redundancy or bankruptcy, our Bill Protection cover can help to cover your regular bills. It’s a monthly benefit that’s paid directly to you, so you can choose the bills you want to pay.

Simple to apply

There are no medical questions to answer because pre-existing medical conditions are excluded. You only need to tell us your age, occupation and whether you have smoked in the last 12 months.

Choice of three different levels of monthly cover

You can choose a payout level of $500, $750 or $1000 per month; depending on the cost of your monthly bills.

Choose a payment option to match your pay days

You can pay your premium either fortnightly or monthly

Suspend your cover if you need to

You can suspend your cover for up to 12 months if you aren’t working.

Discounts are available for joint customers who apply at the same time
How does it work?

You can take out Westpac Bill Protection if you’re between 18 and 64 years old. Note that Westpac Bill Protection premiums are reviewed each year and generally increase with age.

If you become disabled

If an accident or illness prevents you from working for 30 days or more, the monthly benefit that you selected can be paid to you for up to 24 months.

You can claim more than once for the same accident or illness, for different periods, as long as the total of the claim periods isn’t more than 24 months.

The amount you get paid out will not be affected by any other forms of income you receive like ACC or sickness benefit.

You must be working more than 25 hours a week in paid employment at the time your injury or illness occurs to be entitled to your disability benefit.

If you are made redundant

If you are a salary or wage earner and you lose your job because of redundancy for more than 30 days, the benefit you selected can be paid out for up to six months.

If you are made bankrupt

If you have been self-employed and are adjudicated bankrupt as a result of creditors applying to a New Zealand court, your selected benefit can be paid out for up to six months.

What isn’t covered?

You will not get a payout from the Bill Protection policy if the claim results from:

  • you taking part in a strike, a riot, civil commotion, war or illegal acts
  • any condition or event which is caused by AIDS or any AIDS-related condition
  • an event that you knew about or were likely to know about when you applied for your cover
