How do I get into my new home?
New Zealanders have started asking some big questions around “How can I get into my new home faster?” This got us thinking about all the ways we could help make home ownership possible. So we’ve got one of our home loan specialists to tell us some of the options.
Depending on your financial situation, you might need as little as 5% deposit to help you get into your own home. But if you’re not quite there yet, there’s still loads of other ways we might be able to help get you there.
Help from your family
Sometimes you need extra help and this is where gifting can help. As the name implies, this is when your parents or other family members can gift you some of the amount you need for your deposit, so you can apply for a home loan. You will need to show where the money came from but your gifters won’t have any ongoing obligations to the bank.
Another way your family could help you into your dream home is to provide their own home as part security for your mortgage. This allows them to use their assets to help you and means you may need to contribute little or no money up front as a deposit. Of course, you must still be able to meet the repayments on your home loan.

How can KiwiSaver help?
If you’ve been a member of KiwiSaver for at least 3 years, you may be able to take out some or all of your contributions (plus your employer’s contributions) to help you buy your first home - as long as it’s going to be your principal place of residence.
After 3 years of saving you might also qualify for a Housing New Zealand first home subsidy of up to $5,000 depending on how long you’ve been saving. If you qualify, you’ll get $1,000 a year - for each year of contributions to KiwiSaver – for up to five years. Couples who both qualify could up this amount to $10,000 between them.
The KiwiSaver information provided is subject to changes to government policy and regulation from time to tome. Conditions and eligibility criteria apply to KiwiSaver first home withdrawal and subsidy incentives.
Welcome Home Loans
Westpac has teamed up with Housing New Zealand to offer Welcome Home Loans - these are no or low deposit loans designed to help you get into that first home and on the property ladder.
It could be for you if:
- you’re buying your first home - or getting back into home ownership
- you’ll live in the home you are buying
- you don’t have the deposit, or the full amount of deposit
- your annual household income before tax is below $85,000 for one or two borrowers, or is below $120,000 for three or more borrowers
Just note, a Westpac Welcome Home Loan has capped lending amounts and can only be used to purchase owner occupied property, which means you must live there yourself.

60 seconds to get conditionally approved
That's right. When you apply for a home loan online with Westpac, you could be conditionally approved online right there and then within 60 seconds of submitting your application (we will still need to see the required supporting documents before you can get on with renovating or making a bid on a house).

6 month pre-approval to find your dream home
