At Westpac, we take security seriously and do everything we can to help keep your Westpac card secure from fraud. We pride ourselves on providing protection and quick responses if your card or Westpac PayTag® is compromised. 

The idea of being a victim of credit or debit card fraud can worry even the most tech-savvy person so here's how you're protected: 

Card Blocker

Misplaced your credit or debit card? Don't panic, you can now temporarily block your card through Westpac One. Card Blocker allows you to temporarily block and unblock your card instantly if it's been lost. When you find your card you can simply unblock it. To learn how, click here.

If you've lost your card for good, then call us. We'll cancel it and order a new one for you. Call 0800 888 111.

Zero Liability Protection

If your Westpac credit or debit card is lost or stolen, you won’t be held responsible for any fraudulent transactions provided you notify us as soon as possible, have not acted fraudulently or negligently, and have complied with the card’s Conditions of Use. The same applies when you are paying with a Westpac PayTag or if you advise us that you think someone knows your PIN. Of course, you still have to follow these common sense rules:

  • Always keep your card safe and never disclose your PIN to anyone.
  • Take all reasonable steps to prevent other people finding out your PIN - don’t write it down, keep it with your card or store it in a form that makes it easy to spot as your PIN.
  • Pick a PIN that’s unique to you and not easily guessed by anyone else.
  • Take reasonable care to stop others seeing your PIN when you type it.
  • Let us know immediately if your card is lost or stolen or you think someone else may know the PIN. For full details, see the “Liabilities” section of the Conditions of Use for your card.

24/7 Proactive Protection

We use sophisticated monitoring software to screen card transactions and alert us to anything suspicious. We have triggers and alerts that can block cards until we’ve contacted you about any suspected fraud– anywhere in the world.

Text and email alerts

Keep track of your online banking activity, bank account and credit card information wherever you are. You can choose the type of alerts you want, such as a change to your online banking password or when your account balance dips below a certain level. To set up text and email alerts, simply register your email address and mobile number in online banking and select the alerts you’d like to receive. Click here to find out more.  

Embedded microchips in all Westpac credit cards

All MasterCard and Visa cards at Westpac come with encrypted EMV chips to provide extra security. This makes it harder for criminals to read the card’s data and allows your card to be deactivated if it’s lost or stolen.

Westpac Online Guardian

Our fraud detection system continually monitors online banking activity and is set up to spot anything that looks unusual, such as logging on from a foreign country or making a large payment to someone you haven’t paid before. If the system notices something that raises concern, it alerts our Online Trust and Security team for further analysis. You may be asked to authenticate your identity by answering a security question using information you previously provided, or by using a verification code that’s sent to your mobile phone. Click here to find out more. 

MasterPass™

This free ‘digital wallet’ is designed to make online shopping safer by storing all your payment and shipping information in one secure location. When you use MasterPass for online payments you’ll get a personal security message that only you should recognise. This helps avoid phishing scams. You can add an extra layer of protection by including Mobile Verification, where a text message with a unique 4-digit code is sent to your mobile to use when making payments. Click here to find out more.
