What’s a Tertiary Save & Win account and how do I win?

It’s a savings account that rewards your efforts by giving you the chance to win cash while you save:

  • a chance to win monthly prizes of 1x $1000, 2x $250 and 20x $50 from a prize pool allocated only to Tertiary Pac customers
  • the more you save, the greater your chances of winning. Every $1 of your average monthly balance on the last day of each month gives you an entry into the prize draw, as long as you make a minimum deposit in that month of $10
  • no monthly account maintenance fee and free deposits
  • interest earned on your savings each month of 0.25% p.a.
  • to encourage you not to dip into your funds, withdrawals will incur transaction fees ($1 per electronic transaction and $3 per manual transaction).

Charges for Tertiary Pac

You will be charged for:

  • Phone Banking: 50c per call after the first five calls per month
  • using another bank’s ATM: $1 per transaction
  • amending automatic payments: free if you do it online or $5 if you do it over the phone or in branch
  • student overdraft facility: $3 monthly line of credit charge ++
  • unarranged overdraft: $15 per month plus debit interest. This is charged if you go overdrawn without an approved overdraft limit ++
  • transaction fees for your Tertiary Save & Win account ($1 per electronic transaction and $3 per manual transaction).

Do I qualify for Tertiary Pac?

To reap the benefits of Tertiary Pac you'll need to meet all the following requirements:

  • have New Zealand citizenship or residency. If you’re an international student, check out our International Student Pac here
  • be a part-time or full‐time tertiary student studying an NZQA-approved tertiary institute for at least 12 weeks, or completing a Tertiary Education Commission (TEC)[10] approved New Zealand Apprenticeship or ‘Modern Apprenticeship'.

Also, if your application is approved, you’ll need to have any income you earn, including your student loan, paid straight into your Tertiary Easy Access Account.

How long can I stay on a Tertiary Pac for?

  • Length of your study or apprenticeship

What happens once I’ve graduated?

We note the date your study is due to end and will automatically get in touch and move you on to a Graduate Pac when your course ends. All you need to do is let us know if your circumstances change (i.e. if you move house or your course end date changes).

Do I qualify for Career Starter Pac?

To reap the benefits of Career Starter Pac you'll need to meet all the following requirements:

  • be 16 – 20 years old
  • have New Zealand citizenship or residency 
  • have left secondary school in the past two years 
  • can provide proof of full-time employment and be earning (letter from employer/pay slip)[11]

Also, if your application is approved, you’ll need to have your income direct credited to Westpac Career Starter Electronic Account.

How long can I stay on Career Starter Pac for?

  • 2 years

What happens after 2 years?

Career Starter Pac discounts are designed to help you get established for the first two years in your career. After that, you’ll automatically move to an new Electronic Account. Like your Career Starter Electronic Account, with your new Electronic Account, your electronic transactions are free.[1] And if you stop your printed statements via online banking, you’ll pay no account maintenance fee.[1] Any overdraft you have will shift to the current overdraft interest rate as stated on our website.
